Wire Cutting Services
Hansheng Automation specializes in providing high-quality wire-cut machining services for a variety of industries and applications. Wire EDM is a method of cutting metal and other conductive materials. In it, the moving wire breaks down the material under controlled conditions. It uses a thin, electrically charged brass wire that can be moved by computer control so that it is brought close to, but not in contact with, the part to be cut. Conductors and workpieces are either completely submerged or flushed vigorously with insulating liquid. This discharges and creates a spark that melts small particles of the workpiece as the wire advances. The disintegrated particles are washed away by the insulating fluid and the wire is able to advance further. Therefore, graphite, although an electrically conductive material, cannot be processed using wire cutting.
What materials can be cut with WEDM?
Virtually any conductive material can be cut using wire EDM. This would include all metals including steel, aluminium, brass, titanium and all types of alloys and superalloys. The hardness of the material is not a factor to be considered.
Do I need to pay for special industrial tools or fixtures when cutting parts using wire EDM?
Wire EDM requires no special industrial tools and often no special fixtures. The operator of the wire EDM machine is a skilled technician who will use a CAM program to select the appropriate cutting path according to your design drawing. This path will be transmitted to the machine for cutting, and in most cases the machine can be run unattended. He also uses a universal jig to place the part in the machine. In some cases, parts can even be stacked so that multiple parts can be cut at the same time.
What tolerances can be achieved using wire EDM?
Because the CAM program precisely controls the path of the moving wire and the workpiece remains constant, extremely tight tolerances can be maintained. One can expect tolerances within .0005 inches and as low as .0002 inches when required.
What finishes can you deliver with wire EDM?
The wire-cut finish is smooth, but matte. Typical surface finishes are between 16 and 64 microinches, depending on the material. When necessary, multiple finishing operations can be used to deliver an outstanding finish for as low as RMS 12.
Is wire EDM suitable for production as well as prototype parts?
It all depends on the size and thickness of the part to be cut and the overall length to be cut. The type of material to be cut also plays a lesser role. Typically, wire EDM is a relatively slow, albeit extremely precise, process. If the workpiece is relatively thin, such as .250-.500 inches, many workpieces can be stacked and cut at the same time, as long as the machine is only cutting in two axes. If there are tapering requirements, such as conical or equidistant radii, only cut one piece at a time. However, because wire EDM machines can run unattended, labor costs can be kept to a minimum and the same operator can run multiple machines. After getting your order, Hansheng Automation will estimate the most efficient cutting method.

What is wire cutting?
Wire cutting processing is to process parts through the discharge principle of electric spark. Connect the workpiece to the positive pole of the pulse power supply, use molybdenum wire or copper wire as the cutting wire, connect the metal wire to the negative pole of the high-frequency pulse power supply as the tool electrode, and use spark discharge to cut the processed parts. The pulse power supply provides the processing energy, and the special wire cutting working fluid is used to remove the debris generated during the processing. Under the action of the electric field, the surfaces of the cathode and anode are bombarded by the electron flow and the ion flow respectively, so that an instantaneous high-temperature heat source is formed in the electrode gap to melt and vaporize the local metal. The vaporized working fluid and workpiece material vapor expand rapidly in an instant. Under the joint action of this thermal expansion and the stamping of the working fluid, the melted and vaporized workpiece material is thrown out of the discharge channel, and a spark discharge process is completed so far. When the next pulse comes, continue to repeat the above spark discharge process, so as to cut the workpiece into shape. The cutting trajectory of the metal wire is controlled by NC programming to complete the final shape of the workpiece.
Why choose wire cutting?
The processed surface quality is close to the grinding level, and the wire cutting processing works smoothly, evenly, with little vibration, good processing quality, and high production efficiency, which can reach 350/min. The wire cutting machine adopts the method of electrode continuous wire supply, and the electrode can be replenished when it is worn out, so the processing accuracy can be improved. The surface roughness value of the workpiece processed by the wire cutting machine can generally reach Ra0.8μm and above. It can meet the processing of most workpieces with high hardness and ultra-high precision requirements.
What materials can be used for wire cutting?
Conductive metals and graphite can be used for EDM, common tungsten, brass, bronze, carbon, graphite copper, carbon steel, stainless steel, Inconel, etc.
