In precision part machining, a right angle groove is composed of three planes, with a cross-sectional shape of three straight lines that are perpendicular to each other. Right angle grooves are usually divided into three forms: closed, semi closed, and open right angle grooves. Right angle grooves can be distributed on both flat and cylindrical surfaces. The classic right angle groove is a keyway, which can be divided into regular flat keyways and semicircular keyways. The milling process characteristics of right angle grooves are as follows:
1. Use fixed diameter or width milling cutters (such as keyway milling cutters, semicircular keyway milling cutters, disc groove milling cutters, etc.) to control groove width dimensions with higher accuracy, such as shaft keyways that fit with flat and semicircular keys, open right angle grooves with matching accuracy requirements, etc.
2. In the machining of precision parts, the symmetrical position of the keyway on the shaft is usually aligned using different tool alignment methods according to different accuracy levels. For keyways with high symmetry requirements, the indicator ring table method is used to align the relative position between the workpiece axis and the tool axis or the middle section of the disc milling cutter. For keyways with low symmetry requirements, the cutting mark to tool method can be used for machining.
3. The machining of keyways on the shaft usually adopts V-shaped block positioning or uses indexing head self centering chuck clamping to ensure the main machining accuracy requirements such as symmetry of the workpiece.
