Laser is becoming an indispensable component of countless devices and industries. When a laser beam interacts with the surface of a nanoscale material, it emits a light wave called a "plasmon", and given the properties of the plasmon, information can be transmitted. In optical transmission, lasers pump light into a component called a "saturable absorber" to generate optical signals.
Recently, Yu Yao, associate professor of electrical engineering at Arizona State University, and her research team at the Photonics Innovation Center of Arizona State University designed a faster and more energy-efficient nanoscale laser element, called Graphene plasma mixed element structure saturated absorber, or GPSMA.
GPSMA has potential applications in communication, information processing, Spectroscopy, biomedicine and other industries. Absorbents can be used to improve speed, efficiency, and overall performance to promote data transmission, information processing, biomedical sensing, and imaging technologies.
Due to its beneficial characteristics in optical modulation and saturation absorption, Yu Yao's team added a kind of artificial engineering metal Graphene hybrid material in their development process.
In an article recently published on the scientific journal ACS Nano, Yao introduced in detail how her laboratory integrates Graphene based saturable absorbents, and how they try to improve equipment to reduce power consumption while maintaining ultra fast response time.
They achieved these important results by designing an optical antenna array that focuses light onto nanoscale gaps in the material, known as hotspots, to promote absorption. By focusing the laser on these hotspots, they observed an improvement in performance and a reduction in energy consumption.
"Graphene is light in weight and has fast optical response time, but the absorption rate of single-layer form is low," Yu Yao said, "We have designed this device to increase the light absorption of nanoscale hot spots by more than three orders of magnitude, which can not only produce strong light absorption, but also produce saturated absorption effect. Through GPSMA, we are making a saturated absorption device, which can actually reduce power consumption by nearly two to three orders of magnitude."
Based on their significantly improved speed, their new technology will open up new opportunities for infrared laser spectroscopy and high-speed optical signal communication (fiber optic cables and satellite communication).
Our equipment can run at record high speeds, "Yu Yao said." Traditional saturable absorbers can work on a nanosecond time scale, but now we can reach about 60 femtoseconds, which is more than 100000 times faster than before
GPSMA currently operates at the near-infrared wavelength of the Electromagnetic spectrum. Because Graphene has a wide range of optical responses, it can extend its spectral coverage to longer wavelengths in the infrared spectral region, which is of great significance for molecular Spectroscopy and optical communication. However, for longer wavelengths, it is traditionally more difficult to achieve saturated absorption and generate ultra short laser pulses. Therefore, the GPSMA design concept can fill such a technical gap.
The equipment of Yu Yao's team has potential application prospects in the telecommunications, energy, and biomedical industries. This absorbent can be used to improve the speed, efficiency, and overall performance of fiber optic cables, opening up opportunities for advancing data transmission, solar cell performance, and disease detection imaging technology.
